International Championship for Female Drivers

Next Friday evening the Malta Racing Club will be hosting an International Championship for Female Drivers. Although in 2011 and 2012 we had International Races for women, this year thanks to the sponsors Equality as well as the Malta Sports Council, it is being organised on a larger scale.

In fact 12 ladies hailing from nine different countries including Malta will be driving in two races during which they will be awarded points according to the order of finish. The female who accumulates the most points after the two races will be declared the winner.

The foreign participants are coming from France, Sweden, Finland, The Netherlands, Italy, Estonia and Slovenia and amongst them we also find Dutch girl Pamela Westgeest who won the International encounter held in Malta in 2012. Malta will be represented by Laura Cunningham.

Apart from the races and other related spectacle, the Malta Racing Club felt that it had to also combine the event with a good cause thus we invited Europa Donna Malta in order to help promote more breast cancer awareness amongst women because sadly this is a disease which is hitting more and more women each year.

Several distinguished guests have already confirmed their participation for the event amongst these the American Ambassador Her Excellency Gina K.Abercrombie-Winstanley and the Dutch Ambassador Her Excellency Rita Dulci Rahman. The Parliamentary Secretary responsible for the Sports sector the Hon. Chris Agius as well as Malta Sports Council Chairman the Hon Luciano Busuttil will also be attending the event.

The participating drivers will be presented to the public during a motorcycle parade after which the National Anthems of each country will be played and a token of participation will be given to them.

The races are of Copper and Silver categories and after each race a presentation will be held where apart from a token for the winning driver, the owners of the four placed horses will be given trophies with the winner also receiving a commemorative presentation blanket.

The racing programme starts at 6:30 p.m. and the Championship races will be the 5th and 7th ones. Everyone is urged to attend especially women in order to cheer on the competitors in a sport which especially in Malta is still dominated by the men.
