Assikura Championship

Once again this year Assikura Insurance Brokers Ltd are sponsoring a harness racing championship and like last year eligible horses were those in the Gold and Bronze categories.


 


This first championship of the season took off on Sunday 1st February with 50 Gold Category horses taking part in 5 heats so that 20 horses qualified for the semi finals which were raced on Sunday 15th February.


 


Now nine horses remain to take part in the final to be raced on Sunday 1st March. Amongst these two were also finalists last year – Prince Gaillard who finished 4th and Wies Buitenzorg. Unfortunately Quermes Rush was scratched before the draws.


 


Today we had the draws in order to find out with which number each horse will be departing behind the autostart.


 


The nine horses with the drivers that qualified them for the final and in the order they were drawn during the press conference are the following:


 


1.       Prince Gaillard (Charles Camilleri)


2.       Quito de Neret (Noel Baldacchino)


3.       Quel Imprevu (Carmelo Micallef)


4.       Starfirefinnfemfel (Julian Farrugia)


5.       Quel Homme (Rodney Gatt)


6.       Record du Mexique (Marvin Cauchi)


7.       Ofackevo (Julian Farrugia)


8.       Wies Buitenzorg (Eric Bezzina)


9.       Cowboy Party (Chris Cassar)


The prize money in this final is €900 - €400 - €200 - €100


In the meantime last Sunday saw the start of the championship reserved for the Bronze Category horses.  A total of 7 races in which 84 horses took part from which now we have 28 to take part in the semi finals on Sunday 8th March.  The final for this category is going to be held on Thursday 19th March and the prize money is €450 - €200 - €100 - €50.


 


Also present at this press conference, apart from the Malta Racing Club Council members Ivan Carabott, Stephen Ciangura and Kevin Debono, was Mr Andrew Grech, the Managing Director of Assikura Insurance Brokers Ltd.
