Ladies' International Race

Sunday 5th June is Ladies’ Day at the Marsa Race Track and all females going to the track will enter for free. The occasion is that the Malta Racing Club will be hosting two International Races for female drivers coming from 11 different European Countries including Malta.

Harness Racing in Malta is still a male dominated sport even though in Europe ladies’ races are held on a regular basis including International encounters. This is the 4th time that Malta will be hosting such an event with the other three being in 2011, 2012 and 2014 and they have always been a great success.

This year for the first time we have 11 drivers coming from 10 different countries and they will be joined by our Maltese representative Laura Cunningham who is a regular driver in Malta and who has considerable experience in these kind of races having represented our country in 13 encounters organised in Sweden, Estonia, Denmark, The Netherlands, Finland and Norway.

This year’s event would not have been possible without the financial support of Sport Malta who also helped in the organisation. Thanks also to all the owners who enlisted their horses for the race as without them nothing would have been possible.

The 12 drivers are coming from Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Malta. They will participate in two races over 2140m reserved for Silver and Bronze categories. The winning owner and driver will be presented with a commemorative token whilst the horse will get a presentation blanket.

Preceeding the races, the 12 drivers will be presented to the public and after we listen to all the national anthems they will be given a token of participation by the Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport the Hon. Chris Agius in the presence of Sport Malta Chairman the Hon. Luciano Busuttil and CEO Mark Cutajar as well as the Malta Racing Club Chairman Edwin Borg.

A hospitality programme has been prepared for all the participants and their guests which includes a full day in Gozo where apart from sightseeing they will pay a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of the Gozo Horse Racing Association Mrs Mary Mifsud.

The general public is invited to come to the track on Sunday afternoon to come and give their support for this International event.

During the same programme we have another important race which is the Sette Giugno Cup in which 10 Premier Category Horses will take part.  This race is being sponsored by Chukkas Restaurant.
