Johnnie Walker Cup Final

Earlier today we had the draws for the Johnnie Walker Cup Final for Gold Caregory horses. In order to respect the social distancing recommendations by the local Health Authorities, these draws were done solely by the Marketing Manager of M.Demajo Wines & Spirits Ltd Mr Alfred Braddick together with one of the Malta Racing Club’s Council Members Mr Joe Zerafa. These draws were streamed live on the Malta Racing Club’s facebook page.

Despite the difficulties being encountered by importers and agents due to the Covid19 pandemic, M.Demajo Wines & Spirits Ltd for the 8th consecutive year offered financial support for this championship which for the past seven years has been reserved for the Gold Category.

Horse owners’ interest to participate has been considerably more than previous years with 80 horses enlisted to take part in the seven heats raced on Sunday 4th October. For the three semi finals which took place Sunday 18th October we had 29 horses as during one of the heats we had a dead heat for 4th place. Now twelve horses remain and on Sumday 1st November will be facing each other in order to try and enscribe their name on the prestigious Johnnie Walker Cup which takes us back to 1939.

This year marks the 200th Anniversary for Johnnie Walker so it is with deep regret that for this edition the racetrack will be void of spectators due to the current situation and one will have to follow this live either on the MRC’s facebook page or youtube channel.

Apart from the trophy, as always the winning horse will be given a commemorative blanket whilst the owner will receive a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.
